Individuals who live in apartments may constantly find themselves pressed for space, but there are a few ways that one can try and open up a space as much as possible, even when there are only a few rooms to spare.

Interior design consultant Ellen O'Neill recently showed her New York City studio apartment to HouseBeautiful.com, offering a glimpse of some of the creative solutions that she has designed to make the most of her small home.

First, O'Neill has turned one room into a series of mini-rooms by carefully arranging furniture and colors to reflect the function of the area. From lounge to living room, each section is distinct, yet the theme seamlessly blends with the rest of the abode.

She has also used pieces of furniture for multiple purposes. One farm table acts as a desk, but can easily be cleared when company arrives and there's need for a dining table.

Maximizing the amount of light in a room can also make it feel more open. Window treatments such as soft sheer shades can be ideal for smaller homes, because they can bring the outdoors in and offer an expansive view of the scenery.
