How Privacy Window Shades Work
Privacy window shades work by limiting visibility from outside while still allowing light to pass through the material. The level of privacy depends on the fabric opacity, color, and lighting conditions both inside and outside the room.
For example, lighter fabrics may allow more light to filter through but provide less privacy at night, while darker or thicker materials offer increased privacy throughout the day and evening. Understanding how privacy and light interact can help you choose the right solution for your space.

Privacy Shade Styles to Choose From
Light Filtering Shades
Light filtering shades are a popular choice for maintaining daytime privacy while still allowing soft, natural light into a room. These shades help reduce glare and create a comfortable atmosphere without fully darkening the space.
Blackout Shades
Blackout shades provide the highest level of privacy by blocking nearly all incoming light. They are ideal for bedrooms, media rooms, and any space where maximum privacy is needed both day and night. Shop our selection of blackout window shades
Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades
Top-down bottom-up shades offer flexible privacy control by allowing you to adjust the shade from either the top or bottom. This makes it possible to let in natural light from above while maintaining privacy below. Browse our collection of top down bottom up window shades
Dual Shades (Zebra Shades)
Dual shades feature alternating sheer and solid fabric bands that can be adjusted to control both light and privacy. They are a modern option for homeowners looking for both style and function. Explore our zebra window shades

Privacy Shades Buying FAQs
Can I order privacy shades cordless or motorized?
Yes. Most of our privacy cellular and Roman shades are available with a cordless lift, and many also offer motorization, with smart home hub compatibility on select styles. Look for the 'Available Options' listed under each product, or browse all cordless shades and motorized shades.
Which privacy shades are available with top down bottom up?
Top down bottom up is offered on many of our cellular shades in both light filtering and blackout fabrics, including our Express, Premier, Economy, Basics, Sunlera, and Bali lines. Check each product's options, or shop our full top down bottom up shades collection.
Can I add a blackout liner to Roman shades?
Yes. A blackout liner is available as an option on select Roman shades, including our Solid Print, Floral, Striped & Pattern, and Bali Tailored Roman shades. You can choose it when customizing your shade. It adds privacy and light blocking to fabrics that would otherwise let light through.
Do you offer side channels to block light gaps around the shade?
Yes. Side channels are available on many of our cellular shades. They mount along the sides of the window to cover the small gaps where light and outside views can get through on an inside mount. See our shades with side channels.
How can I check a fabric's privacy before I order?
Order free samples of the fabrics you're considering. Hold each sample against the window during the day, then again at night with the room lights on, to see how much light and visibility comes through in the actual room.
How quickly can I get privacy shades?
Production time varies by product. Shades marked 'Made in 2 Days,' such as our Express cordless cellular shades, are built quickly for faster delivery. Browse all express production blinds and shades. Shipping is free on orders within the continental U.S.
What if I measure my windows wrong?
Our Guaranteed to Fit measuring insurance helps protect your order if your shades don't fit. Before ordering, follow our measuring instructions, which also explain what the guarantee covers. For privacy, keep in mind that an outside mount covers more of the window edges than an inside mount.
* Production lead times are only an estimate and does not apply to any colors that are out of stock. Production begins the following business day after ordering. Please allow additional time for shipping.
