Things to Consider Before Choosing No-Drill Blinds or Shades
No-drill installation can be a great solution when you want to avoid putting holes in the window frame, but it is not always the best option for every window. Depending on the mounting system and product, there can be a few tradeoffs compared with a traditional bracket installation.
- Larger light gaps may occur: Some no-drill tension systems require additional space on the side where the tension mechanism is located. This can create a slightly larger side light gap than you may see with the same shade installed using standard mounting brackets.
- Mostly limited to inside mounts: Many mechanical no-drill systems rely on pressure between the sides of the window opening, so they generally require a suitable inside-mount installation.
- Window depth requirements still apply: No-drill does not mean the shade takes up less space. The headrail and mounting mechanism still need enough depth to fit securely inside the window opening.
- Size and weight limits may be more restrictive: Large or heavy blinds and shades may not be available with no-drill mounting even when the same product can be made larger with traditional brackets.
- Some systems add visible hardware: Certain no-drill options use a separate tension headrail that remains visible above or behind the blind or shade. Integrated tension systems generally provide a cleaner appearance.
- Not ideal for every window shape: Tension-fit systems work best with solid, relatively even opposing surfaces. Very uneven, tapered or irregular window openings may be better suited to a standard drilled installation.
If you can use traditional mounting brackets and want the most secure long-term installation, we generally recommend the standard drill-mounted option. No-drill mounting is most useful when you need to avoid screw holes or have a window where drilling is difficult or undesirable.

- Prep: Clean the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol; let it dry. Measure twice.
- Mount: Peel and stick adhesive brackets or set the tension rod or place magnets on the steel surface. Seat the headrail per the instructions.
- Set & Test: Operate the shade fully up/down. For adhesive installs, allow recommended cure time before repeated cycling.

Best Practices
Mind the weight: Respect size/weight limits for each no-drill system.
Surface matters: Adhesives bond best to smooth, sealed, non-porous surfaces (painted wood/metal, tile, glass). Matte chalk paints, raw wood, heavy texture, or dusty brick reduce hold.
Climate counts: High humidity or heat can impact adhesives; follow cure windows and avoidance of load during initial set.
Light control: For darker bedrooms, consider an outside-mount shade with extra overlap or add side treatments to reduce edge glow.
Measuring & Ordering Tips
Measure width in three places and order the narrowest (inside mount); measure height left/center/right and order the longest. For tension-fit, verify the allowed span. For adhesive or magnets, confirm cassette depth clearance around handles and trim.
When to Choose Traditional (Drilled) Mounts
