Q:
This page explains how top-down bottom-up (TDBU) blinds work and when to choose them. It’s an informational guide; to shop available products and fabrics, use the link at the end.

What are top-down bottom-up blinds and how do they work?

A:
TDBU shades use a movable middle rail so you can lower the top for natural light while keeping the lower portion closed for privacy—or raise them from the bottom like a standard shade. Many styles are available with cordless, continuous loop, or motorized operation.

Q: Where do TDBU blinds make the most sense?

  • Street-facing rooms: daylight from above with privacy below.

  • Bathrooms & bedrooms: maintain privacy without going fully dark.

  • Home offices: reduce screen glare while keeping ambient light.

Q: Which materials/fabrics are best?

A: Choose light-filtering for soft glow and privacy, or blackout for sleep/media rooms. In humid spaces, pick moisture-resistant fabrics (avoid real wood).

Q: Do TDBU blinds provide full privacy at night?

A: With blackout or tight-weave fabrics, privacy is excellent. For inside mounts, small edge gaps can remain; an outside (overlap) mount or side returns helps reduce glow lines.

Q: Are there size limits or windows that aren’t ideal?

A: Extra-wide windows may be heavy; consider 2-on-1 headrail to split the span. For very shallow frames, verify depth requirements for the middle rail. TDBU is not common on traditional slatted blinds.

Q: What lift options should I pick?

  • Cordless: clean look and child-safe.

  • Continuous loop: smooth on larger sizes.

  • Motorized: ideal for tall or hard-to-reach windows and scene control.

Q: Measuring tips for the best fit?

  • Measure width at top/middle/bottom; order to the tightest number for inside mounts.

  • Confirm minimum depth for the TDBU rail system.

  • Choose outside mount when trim is uneven or maximum darkening is needed.

Q: How is TDBU different from top-down only?

A: Top-down only lowers from the top but can’t raise from the sill. TDBU does both, giving the most flexibility for privacy and light.

The term "Retail" price refers to the manufacturer's or supplier's suggested retail price for an item. The initially displayed Retail price is specific to a product with the selected dimensions and default options/features. Please note that the Retail price for the selected product will be provided upon specifying its width, height, features and options.

Please note that the Retail price may not reflect the prevailing market price or the regular retail price. It is common for products to be sold at lower prices than the Retail price due to various factors, including promotional events, discounts, market competition, or supplier agreements.

Products may be offered at the same or lower "After Coupon" prices during future promotional events starting on or after the final day of any advertised promotion.
