Q:
Do you carry side mount blinds? I am looking specifically for side mount cell shades.
A:

Each of our horizontal blinds such as mini blinds, faux wood blinds and wood blinds come standard with side mount brackets. The brackets are universal and can be mounted to the top, side or back of the brackets. Inside mount and outside mount blinds use the same brackets.

Cellular shades come standard with top mount brackets for inside mount shades. The same brackets mount to the wall behind the cellular shades if mounted as outside mount shades. Special brackets are needed for side mount applications but are available upon request.

Most shades can be mounted to the top of the window frame. Side mount brackets are only needed when there is an arch top and the shades cannot be mounted to the top of the window frame. Please let us know if you need side mount brackets for your installation. These honeycomb shades are recommended for side mount intallation:

Side-Mount Blinds - FAQs

What does “side mount” mean for blinds and shades?

Side mounting uses brackets fixed into the left and right jambs of the window opening (instead of the head/ceiling of the frame). The blind or shade spans between the side brackets.

When should I choose side-mount brackets instead of top-mount?

Use side-mount when there’s no solid surface at the top such as an arch top or the top is a material such as stone, steel lintel, tilt-in sash clearance, when depth is limited, or in narrow openings where top screws can’t be set safely.

Which blinds and shades can be side-mounted?

Often compatible: roller shades (with end-cap style brackets), 1" aluminum minis, some cellular/honeycomb shades, and select wood/faux-wood blinds. Check the spec sheet or contact customer service as not every headrail accepts side-mount hardware.

How much width do I need inside the frame to use side-mount brackets?

You need enough clear width for the shade plus both bracket depths and any end-cap hardware. Many programs need an extra 1/4"–1/2" beyond the ordered width—verify per product.

Does side mounting change the depth or projection requirements?

Side-mounting helps when top depth is limited, but the overall projection of the headrail/roll is the same. If you lack recess, expect the shade to project slightly beyond the trim.

How do I measure for an inside side-mount installation?

Measure the clear width between jambs at top, middle, and bottom; use the tightest number. Confirm there’s solid material for screws on both sides and enough clearance for the bracket hardware and end caps.

Can I mount a blind that’s wider than the window frame to improve coverage?

Yes—but that’s an outside mount. Side-mount is typically an inside mount between jambs. For extra coverage or blackout, choose an outside mount and add overlap to each side.

Are there weight limits for side-mount installs, especially on wood/faux-wood blinds?

Yes. Heavier blinds require solid wood jambs (not just drywall) and proper pilot holes. For very wide/heavy units, split into multiple blinds on one headrail or switch to an outside mount. Also some products may not be able to span larger opening without a center support so they will not work on side mount applications.

What if my jambs aren’t square—can I still side-mount the shade level?

Yes. Shim behind the bracket as needed and use a level across the end caps before tightening. Check roll clearance so fabric doesn’t rub one side.

What fasteners work for side-mounting into masonry, tile, or metal jambs?

Use substrate-appropriate anchors: masonry screws/anchors for brick or concrete; carbide bits and anchors for tile; self-tapping screws for metal. Follow the product’s bracket hole sizes and load guidance.

Will side-mount blinds have light gaps at the edges?

All inside mounts have small edge gaps. For darker rooms, consider outside mount with overlap, add side channels (for rollers), or layer with drapery to reduce edge glow.

Can cordless or motorized blinds be side-mounted?

Often yes, if the headrail supports end-mount brackets. Note that some motorized cassettes need specific end caps and extra clearance—check the program’s side-mount kit before ordering.

How do I handle window handles or crank operators with side-mount blinds?

Measure to the shallowest obstruction. If the fabric or slats would hit a handle, move to an outside mount or use spacer brackets (where offered) to clear the hardware.

How do I get a finished look with a side-mounted shade or blind?

Choose a matching valance, fascia, or cassette if the program offers one. For wood/faux-wood, use valance returns to cover the sides; for rollers, a cassette provides a clean, modern finish.

Any safety do’s and dont’s for side-mount installations?

Don’t mount only into drywall—use solid wood or proper anchors. Pre-drill pilot holes, confirm bracket level before tightening, and test operation slowly to ensure the roll or slats clear the jambs.
