Roman shades are absolutely still in style. Their soft fabric construction, tailored folds, and custom look make them one of the most versatile window treatments for both classic and modern interiors.

From contemporary homes to traditional spaces, Roman shades continue to be a popular design choice because they combine the softness of drapery with the functionality of shades. Their ability to add texture, color, and structure to a window helps them stay relevant across changing design trends.

Are Roman Shades in Style Right Now?

Yes, Roman shades are still very much in style. They remain a favorite among homeowners and interior designers because they offer a more finished, decorative look than many standard window treatments while still being practical for everyday use.

As interior design continues to emphasize texture, layered spaces, and custom details, Roman shades fit naturally into both updated and timeless rooms.

Why Roman Shades Remain Popular

  • Soft, tailored appearance: Roman window shades add structure without looking harsh or overly formal

  • Wide fabric selection: Available in many colors, textures, prints, and patterns

  • Versatile style: Works with traditional, transitional, farmhouse, coastal, and modern interiors

  • Layered design potential: Can be paired with drapery for a more complete window covering

  • Custom look: Creates a polished, designer-inspired finish

Popular Design Styles That Use Roman Shades

Roman shades are one of the few window coverings that can work across a wide range of home styles.

  • Traditional: Floral patterns, rich fabrics, and classic folds add elegance

  • Modern Farmhouse: Neutral fabrics and simple folds create a warm, relaxed look

  • Coastal: Linen-like textures and lighter colors help create a breezy feel

  • Modern and Transitional: Flat or tailored Roman shades add softness to clean-lined spaces

How Designers Use Roman Shades

Interior designers often use Roman shades when they want to add fabric texture without the fullness of drapery. They are especially useful in rooms where a softer window treatment is desired but space is limited.

Roman shades are also commonly layered with side panels or drapes to create more depth and improve light control. This makes them both a decorative and functional choice.

Are Roman Shades Timeless or Trendy?

Roman shades are both timeless and current. While certain fabrics and fold styles may trend in and out, the overall concept of a soft fabric shade with a tailored appearance has remained popular for years.

That long-term appeal is one reason custom Roman shades continue to be chosen for homes that want a classic look without feeling outdated.

What Makes Roman Shades Feel Updated?

Roman shades can feel especially current when paired with the right fabric and style details. Today’s most popular Roman shades often feature:

  • Neutral colors and textured fabrics

  • Flat or clean fold styles

  • Cordless lift system or motorized Roman shades

  • Simple, tailored patterns

  • Soft woven materials that add warmth without visual clutter

Custom Roman Shades and Designer Appeal

Roman shades continue to be a favorite in professionally designed spaces because they combine the softness of fabric with the structure of a tailored shade. With a wide range of fabrics, fold styles, liners, and lift options available, they can be customized to match both the function and aesthetic of the room.

For homeowners looking for window coverings that feel polished and intentional, custom shades offer a more finished appearance than many standard off-the-shelf options.

Things to Consider Before Choosing the Perfect Roman Shades

While Roman shades are stylish, they are not the right choice for every room or every homeowner.

  • Fabric selection matters: The wrong color or pattern can feel dated more quickly than a neutral texture

  • Stack height: Roman blinds fold upward and may take up more visual space at the top of the window when raised

  • Light control varies: Depending on the fabric and liner, Roman shades can range from light filtering to blackout. Blackout liners offer excellent light control.

  • Fold style: Various fold options are available from flat fold Roman shades to more relaxed Roman shades with hobbled fold.

Are Roman Shades Right for Your Home?

Roman shades are a strong choice if you want a window treatment that feels softer and more decorative than blinds or standard roller shades. They work especially well in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and other spaces where appearance matters as much as function.

If your goal is a fabric-based, timeless window treatment that can still feel fresh and updated, Roman shades remain one of the best options available.
