Pros and Cons of Roman Shades: What to Know Before You Buy image

Roman shades are a popular window treatment known for their soft fabric appearance and tailored style. They can add warmth, texture, and a more decorative look to a room than many standard blinds or shades.

But like any window treatment, Roman shades come with both advantages and drawbacks. Understanding the pros and cons of Roman shades can help you decide whether they are the right fit for your home, lifestyle, and design goals.

Browse our collection of custom Roman shades to explore available fabrics, fold styles, and lift options. Discover durable and stylish premium shades for windows in a wide range of materials.

Pros of Roman Shades

1. Soft, Elegant Appearance

One of the biggest advantages of Roman shades is their fabric-based look. Roman shades add softness and texture to a room, creating a more refined and decorative appearance than many hard window treatments.

2. Wide Range of Fabrics and Styles

Roman shades are available in many fabrics, colors, patterns, and fold styles. This makes it easier to match them to different interior designs, from traditional and farmhouse to coastal and modern spaces.

3. Good Light Control and Privacy

Depending on the fabric and liner you choose, Roman shades can provide a range of light control options from light filtering to blackout. They can also offer strong privacy, especially when lined. For more options see of collection of blackout woven wood shades

4. Custom, Finished Look

Roman shades often look more tailored and polished than basic blinds or shades. Their structured folds create a custom window treatment appearance that works well in design-focused spaces.

5. Works Well in Many Rooms

Roman shades are often used in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and offices because they offer both style and function. They are especially useful in rooms where appearance matters as much as privacy and light control.

Cons of Roman Shades

1. Stack Height Can Block Part of the Window

When Roman shades are raised, the folded fabric stacks at the top of the window. Depending on the style and fabric, this stack height can cover more of the glass than other shade types, slightly reducing the open view.

2. Fabric Can Require More Maintenance

Because Roman shades are fabric window treatments, they may require more care than faux wood blinds or roller shades. Dust, pet hair, and stains may be more noticeable depending on the fabric and color.

3. Not Always Ideal for High-Moisture Areas

Roman shades are not always the best choice for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or other humid spaces unless the material is specifically suited for those environments. Moisture can affect some fabrics over time.

4. Can Be More Expensive Than Simpler Shades

Roman shades often cost more than basic blinds or roller shades because of their fabric construction, custom tailoring, and design options. The final price can also increase with upgraded fabrics, liners, and motorization.

5. Some Styles Feel More Decorative Than Minimal

For homeowners who prefer a very clean or modern look, some Roman shade styles may feel softer or more decorative than desired. The fold style and fabric choice have a big impact on how modern or traditional the finished shade feels.

Are Roman Shades a Good Choice for Privacy?

Roman shades can be a good choice for privacy, especially when paired with a privacy liner or blackout liner. Unlined or lighter fabrics may allow more light through and may not offer the same level of privacy as lined options.

Are Roman Shades Energy Efficient?

Roman shades can help improve insulation, especially when made with thicker fabrics or lined materials. While they are not typically as insulating as cellular shades, they can still help soften light and reduce some heat transfer at the window.

Are Roman Shades Hard to Clean?

Roman shades are not necessarily difficult to clean, but they do require more care than some other window treatments. Regular dusting, vacuuming with a brush attachment, and spot cleaning may be needed depending on the fabric.

Who Should Choose Roman Shades?

Roman shades are a strong choice for homeowners who want a softer, more decorative window treatment with a tailored look. They work especially well in rooms where design matters and where fabric texture can enhance the overall style of the space.

When Roman Shades May Not Be the Best Choice

Roman shades may not be ideal if you want the slimmest possible stack, the easiest-clean window treatment, or the most moisture-resistant option for bathrooms and kitchens. In those cases, roller shades, faux wood blinds, or other materials may be more practical.

Are Roman Shades Worth It?

Roman shades can absolutely be worth it, especially if your priority is a more polished and decorative window treatment. If you want a deeper look at the value side of the decision, read our guide on whether Roman shades are worth it.
