How to Install Roman Shades image

Installing Roman shades is a straightforward process that can be completed with a few basic tools. Whether you're mounting inside the window frame or outside, understanding how to position Roman shade mounting brackets and hardware is key to a successful installation.

This guide walks you through how to hang Roman shades, attach brackets, and properly secure your window treatment for a clean, professional look.

Tools and Hardware Needed

  • Roman shade mounting brackets (included with most shades)

  • Screws and anchors

  • Drill or screwdriver

  • Tape measure

  • Level

  • Pencil

Before starting, make sure you have all the Roman shades hardware required for your specific product.

Inside Mount vs Outside Mount

Inside Mount

An inside mount places the Roman shade within the window frame for a clean, built-in look.

  • Requires sufficient window depth

  • Provides a streamlined appearance

Outside Mount

An outside mount installs the shade above or outside the window frame.

  • Better for shallow windows

  • Blocks more light

  • Can make windows appear larger

Step-by-Step: How to Install Roman Shades

Step 1: Measure and Mark Bracket Placement

Use a tape measure to determine where your Roman shade mounting brackets will be installed. Mark the positions lightly with a pencil.

Step 2: Install the Mounting Brackets

Secure the brackets using screws. If mounting into drywall, use anchors for extra support. Ensure brackets are level and evenly spaced.

Step 3: Attach the Roman Shade

Once the brackets are installed, align the headrail of the shade and snap or hook it into place depending on your model. This step completes the process of how to attach Roman shades.

Step 4: Test Operation

Raise and lower the shade to ensure smooth operation. Check that it is level and properly aligned.

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Installing brackets unevenly

  • Using incorrect screws or anchors

  • Not measuring window depth for inside mount

  • Overtightening hardware

Tips for a Professional Installation

  • Always use a level before drilling

  • Pre-drill holes to prevent damage

  • Follow manufacturer instructions for your specific shade

  • Double-check measurements before installing
