Honeycomb Shades Glossary Terms

Honeycomb shades are excellent insulators. The unique cellular fabric design allows the shades to absorb heat and sound. Some commonly used window treatment terminology is used to explain the details and degrees of energy efficiency.

Honeycomb Shade Terms

R-Value: Measures resistance to heat flow. The higher the r-value, the better the window shades insulate and conserve energy.

Shading Coefficient: Measures how much heat passes through the window shades. The lower the shading coefficient, the more heat the window treatments block and the better they save energy.

UV Blockage: Measure how much UV rays window coverings block. UV rays can be harmful to home furnishings. They can fade wood, fabrics and carpet. Window shades with a higher UV Blockage can save your home from harmful UV Rays.

Light Transmission: Measures the amount of actual light a window shade will block. Blackout shades will block virtually all light. A light filtering shade will block only enough light to provide privacy.

Sound Absorption: Measures how much a window shade blocks sound. The higher the value, the more sound the window shades will block.
