Occasionally window blinds are mis-measured and are too large to fit in the window frame. Most horizontal blinds such as wood blinds and faux wood blinds can be trimmed or cut down to the right width so they can be installed. Follow these easy steps to cut down your blinds.

Tools Needed

  • Chop Saw
  • Tin Snips or Hack Saw
  • Tape or Plastic Wrap
  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil
  • Straight Edge
  • metal file(not required)

Cutting The Window Blind Slats

  1. Determine the desired width of the blind slats. A typical deduction on inside mount blinds is about 1/2" of the window frame measurement
  2. We recommend taping the ends of the window blind slats to prevent the wood from splintering. Align the blind slats and the bottom rail so they are even. Warp all the slats and the bottom rail in the location that is to be cut.
  3. Measure the distance to cut each blind slat and mark a line on the taped slats.
  4. Place the Blinds on the saw.
  5. Slide the slats so they are extend past the blind headrail. You want the headrail to be out of the way of the saw blade as you cut the blinds.
  6. Cut the blind slats and bottom rail at the marked length.

Cutting The Window Blind Headrail

  1. Mark the length to cut off the headrail.
  2. Remove the metal end stiffener from the end of the blind headrail.
  3. Cut the headrail on the mark using the hacksaw or tin snips. Remember that the edges of the headrail will be hidden by the brackets as well as the valance so it doesn't have to be perfect.
  4. File any loose edges.
  5. Place the end stiffener back into the headrail of the window blinds.

Conclusion

Wood blinds or faux wood blinds can be cut down a few inches if they are too large to fit the window frame. If you follow these steps and use the right tools, the window blinds will look professional.

If you do not feel comfortable cutting the window blinds yourself, you might consider hiring a professional such as a blind manufacturer or a cut down service such as www.relocateblinds.com.
