Small spaces can make a big impression with proper lighting

If you've recently downsized to a smaller apartment or moved to the city, you may be puzzled as to the best way to create a comfortable environment. Any interior designer will tell you that lighting is one of the best ways to improve the look of your space. Creative use of fixtures, decorative lighting and window treatments can make the smallest space more inviting.

Interior designer Candice Olson from HGTV's "Candice Tells All," recently shared her design philosophy with the daily newspaper, Metro. Olson suggests that using lighting around the perimeter of the room instead of the center is one of the easiest ways to spruce up a space and make it appear larger.

Olson also believes draperies and mirrors can help give a large-scale illusion to your space. She told the news source that placing a mirror next to the window for extra light and depth and to use large, flowing draperies to make the windows appear larger than they are.

Window blinds and shades are simple ways to add class and functionality to your new living space. Consider wood blinds to add a warm accent to your décor.
