West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin announced this week that the state would be offering a rebate program for anybody who purchases an energy saving appliance, West Virginia MetroNews reports. The program is one of many across the country aimed at encouraging people to be more energy efficient.

"As we become more electronic with all of the modern conveniences in our lives, we continue to increase energy usage and we continue to put pressure on our energy supply," West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (EPA) Secretary Randy Huffman told the news source. "So, the more efficient we can be with what we have, the smarter that is."

Keeping the air conditioner running can be costly - ABC news reports that EPA estimates a household spend almost 20 percent of utility bills in colling costs.

Those looking for additional ways to save money on energy bills should hang appropriate window treatments and keep shades or blinds closed during the day

Industry experts recommend installing honeycomb shades as an effective way to keep the sun from heating up a room.
