The Buffalo News reports that front porches have experienced a resurgence in popularity, especially for homeowners whose children have grown up and left home. These extensions to a home can connect individuals with sidewalk traffic and keep them involved in the community.

For those who are considering adding a porch, an important element to remember is to have a natural appearance.

"You want it to look like it has always been there, to be in concert with the original form of the house, " design consultant Karen Fick Arrison told the news source.

However, porches are also gathering places for friends, family and other loved ones. The news provider claims that they can be places where homeowners can express themselves through unique colors, furniture and accessories.

During the summer, keeping cards, board games and other entertainment outside can make the area seem like a warm and inviting place. Rockers and porch swings are also good ideas for older adults since these seats may relieve tension and provide comfortable resting spots.

Experts recommend using vertical blinds as an adjustable divider between the home and porch because these window treatments can be hung on sliding glass doors to block the outdoors from view if one wants privacy.
