Cordless Shades and Child Safety

In late 2000, the window covering industry issued a recall to repair all window coverings to prevent the risk of strangulation to young children. The recall involved millions of window blinds that had pull cords that can form a loop and cause strangulation.

There are several things that may be done to prevent tragedies like this from happening and ensure basic window blinds child safety. Blinds and Shades today are much safer and their cords are harder to get tangled in. Many shades are now manufactured as cordless shades, eliminating the cords all together. When considering window blinds or shades, here are some basic child safety guidelines:

1. Looping cords should be tied down with hold downs.
2. Looping cords can also be cut and each end tied with a tassel.
3. Move all cribs, furniture and toys away from window blinds.
4. Keep cords out of reach of children.
