Easy decorating tips can bring attention to 'hidden' areas of a roomJun 16 2011 ![]() Adding art work or decorative accessories to a plain corner of a room creates a new focal point. HouseBeautiful.com reports that designers frequently choose a space that isn't the expected location for a piece of artwork or other decorative accessory to draw attention to "hidden" sections of a room. For instance, New York City interior designer Eric Cohler told the website that he likes to bring sparkle to artwork accessories by using bright, colored frames around a white mat, or a white frame around a colored mat. They can then be mounted in what Cohler calls an "unimaginative space" that now becomes a focal point. Many such decorating tricks can be accomplished in a day, even when a major piece of furniture is involved. To give new life to bookshelves or large cabinets, the back wall of the unit can be painted an accent color or covered with wallpaper. Creating an interesting combination of window treatments is another way to bring a quick fix to a room. Adding layers of texture can be achieved by using two treatments in entirely different materials, such as soft sheer curtains over wood blinds.
