Roller shades combined with other window coverings are an attractive choice

Home decorators trying to create a cozy atmosphere in large rooms should rely on soft furnishings and new furniture arrangements to reach this goal.

Too often, homeowners line up large pieces against the walls to leave more space in the center of a room. But that approach can backfire and create a space that lacks warmth.

Houzz.com recommends arranging furniture into seating areas that have chairs, sofas and loveseats at close angles or across from each for a more inviting atmosphere.

In addition, soft furnishings such as rugs and cushions can be used to unify the room's different elements and activity areas. A series of area rugs can be placed to separate different seating areas, but they can have complementary colors or patterns to tie together the overall look of the room.

Choosing window treatments that are too large or heavy-looking also detracts from the impact a window can have in a space. Instead, choosing attractive roller shades or blinds in combination with a valance or curtain ensemble will allow light to filter in during daytime and provide privacy in the evening.
