Furniture and complementary window treatments can be added to a bathroom

Recorating a bathroom can go beyond just adding new tile or fixtures. Designers and homeowners have begun to integrate pieces of furniture, in seating or in place of traditional vanities, into the bathroom.

"Now, bathrooms are much more than just a small room in which to bathe," interior designer Rachel Horn told DIYNetwork.com. "The bathroom has become a sanctuary for some and has come to reflect the owner's taste in more than just tile."

Vintage pieces are particularly attractive when juxtaposed against the smooth, clean lines found in a modern-day bathroom. By adding colors that are found in traditional rooms - subtle neutrals and pastels - a home decorator can bring cottage-style decorating to the room.

Renovating an old bedroom dresser into a vanity can be done easily by taking out the back and some interior shelves to make room for plumbing. The top can be replaced with a countertop to accommodate a sink and fixtures.

For country-style décor, the doors of a vanity can be painted and decorated to look like the front doors of a home. Use a vibrant color that offsets more subdued tones in the bathroom. For hardware, use traditional door knockers, centered in the doors, instead of corner pulls.

Wallpaper can also be attached to a vanity in either a print or pattern to make it the focal point of the bath area. To make the paper lie flat, use wood filler to smooth out any carved details on the doors.

Window treatments that match the style chosen for a new vanity can include those that accentuate the style of the furniture incorporated into the bath area. Fabric roller shades can complement the wall color or upholstery used on a chair situated in the bathroom. Faux wood blinds can be matched to wood tones in furniture pieces.

It's important to choose window coverings that are durable and easy-to-clean because of the changes in temperature and humidity that occur in the bathroom. Buying custom blinds online gives homeowners a wide range of choices in treatments that are attractive as well as sturdy.

The same reasoning applies to furniture brought into the bath area. "The most important things to consider are strength and durability," Horn told the website. "With an old or vintage cabinet, for example, you have to be sure it's sturdy enough to hold the sink and faucets and that it will hold up in terms of water."
