Fauxwood blinds can be among quick fixes that give a room a new look

Homeowners have don't always have time for a major overhaul when a special gathering is planned. But a fast facelift, by adding or swapping out smaller furnishings, may be all that's needed to make a home guest-ready.

"Ask yourself what simple items could add interest," Boston designer Abbey Koplovitz told Better Homes and Gardens magazine. "A change may be as easy as rearranging furniture or putting an oversized potted plant in a corner."

Another tried and true trick of designers is to equip a living room with a set of slipcovers that can bring a different color palette into a room. Reversible ones, with a dark color on one side and something brighter on the other, are a very versatile choice.

Choosing a new window treatment such as faux wood blinds, which come in a wide range of colors and finishes, can give a room a new look. They also will alter the amount of light that streams in, and can be adjusted easily depending on how much natural light is desired.

Other quick changes include brightly colored pillows or seat cushions, or bringing in furniture from another room for a new arrangement.
