Furniture choice and sheer window treatments open up small bedroom
Apr 22 2011
Giving the illusion of more space in a small bedroom can be deceptively easy for home decorators who try some new tactics when choosing their furniture.
Having some bedroom furniture that is the same color as the walls can make a small room seem bigger.
"Consider having at least some of the furniture pieces the same color as the walls. Even the bigger items like armoires and chest will begin to blend into the room," recommends Freshome.com. "You can add some detail by stenciling in a design or accent onto the furniture."
In addition, the website suggests choosing furniture that has more than one purpose, such as a low bureau that can double as a table or a bed that has built-in drawers for storage.
There are no hard and fast rules about seating in a bedroom. A hardwood captain's chair can be softened for bedroom use by adding a fabric skirt around the seat. It can serve as a seat for a dressing table or, with the addition of a footstool, can be a comfortable reading chair.
A window treatment such as sheer panel curtains or soft sheer shades allow filtered light into a room giving it an airy and open quality.
