One of the most overlooked parts of your home during spring cleaning has to be your window treatments. Blinds have an uncanny ability to collect dust, and they can cause allergy problems and discomfort if left unchecked. Make the effort to clean your window treatments this spring, or install some new fabric shades instead, according to NorthJersey.com.

Industry insider Kimberly Marseu has found that cleaning window treatments during the spring can help remove a long winter's worth of grime.

"It gets that dust that has been sitting there, to make your whole room seem much cleaner after a long winter," Marseu told the news source.

A weekly dusting is always a good way to keep this area in check, and certain blinds can be soaked in the tub. Additionally, be sure to clean your drapes, curtains and window frames at least a couple times a year.

Fabric shades such as honeycomb cellular shades gather less dust than blinds and will actually help increase your energy-efficiency. These shades form a tight seal with your windows to reduce glare and control air leakage.
