Mission furnishings fit today's design trendsMar 24 2011 ![]() Mission style furniture features dark woods and auburn glass lampshades. During the early 1900s, when bungalows and craftsman-style architecture became popular in home design, Mission furniture brought clean, geometric lines into the interiors of these homes. The style has a decidedly masculine look, with its use of striped wood grain oak and simple hardware, according to HGTV.com. The Mission style of today continues the use of dark stained oak furniture. Upholstered seating in deep greens and reds, and all shades brown complement the look. Area rugs in nature colors are a good choice to offset wood flooring in a Mission-inspired room. "For a touch of Mission simplicity in any space, add accessories typical of the style such as lamps with auburn glass/metal shades, small tables or a magazine rack," states the website. Woven wood shades have variations in colors and texture that offset Mission furnishings well. Wooden blinds also blend in with the darker, masculine tones of the style. Both have a natural look that complements both contemporary and traditional furniture.
