Roller shades can be a backdrop for dramatic color combinations in a room
Feb 24 2011
As host of the HGTV show Color Splash, designer and artist David Bromstad thinks nothing of pairing dark brown with hot pink, offset by snippets of bright yellow.
Bold colors mark the style of designer David Bromstad.
Transforming low-key color schemes that have outgrown their homeowners' interest or taste, Bromstad decorates vibrant spaces that allow color to play off his designs, according to HGTV.com. A rustic, earthy-toned bedroom became a casbah with Asian-inspired décor and luxurious silks and velvets. A purple sofa placed at the foot of a dramatic four-poster said it all.
"We've been in a war and a recession. That's why accent colors with yellow and purple are popular," said Bromstad. "They're optimistic and flirty and happy colors."
Bromstad isn't averse to using a homeowner's furniture as the basis of his design. He kept a bed with a geometric headboard and a white comforter that had a matching geometric pattern when he redid one bedroom. But Bromstad added canary yellow light fixtures, an aqua leather couch and an array of blue and yellow pillows on the bed.
Roller shades for windows are a versatile touch for designs such as these because they can be chosen in coordinating colors or in neutrals that create a simple backdrop for dramatic color combinations.
