Hang bamboo shades to beat the summer heat

As summer grows closer and the temperatures continue to rise, homeowners may soon start looking for ways to keep cool while inside. Experts suggest that maintaining a comfortable living space may be as easy as opening the windows and installing the appropriate blinds.

"Open the doors and windows when it's cooler outside than in, like in the evening or very early morning," Bob West, Clark Public Utilities energy counselor, told The Columbian. "Close it up during the day to keep heat out. A well-insulated house will usually stay cool most of the day."

West also recommends hanging bamboo shades to block the sun and minimize the heat, and reminds homeowners to shut the window coverings early in the day.

Interior designer Lynn Megginson praised the benefits of woven bamboo shades, as they can help minimize heat without completely blocking out natural light. "They will allow light to filter through while giving you privacy as well," she told the Washington Post, adding, "They are easily cleaned if they get dirty, and give you a great natural look."
