Motorized blinds can help older adults age at home

New research from AARP has shown that the vast majority of adults are planning to age at home for as long as possible. The survey found that even seniors (88 percent) expressed an overwhelming desire to stay in their current residence. Those who were 50 and over made up an even bigger percentage, with only 10 percent saying that they might want to move in the near future.

Most older adults were most concerned about living near family and friends, as well as how easy it was to walk to and from different points of interest. However, transportation didn't seem to matter to many - only a quarter said that they were interested in public transportation options.

The one problem that may arise for older adults is modifying their homes to fit their changing needs. More than half (60 percent) of respondents said that their homes had narrow doorways and entrance steps that may be treacherous to elderly residents.

One way to make sure a home is safer is to install motorized blinds, which can be drawn and raised with the flip of a switch. These window treatments ensure that older adults won't have to risk falling while crossing a dimly-lit room.
