It's not always easy to keep a home warm during the cold winter months. Heating can be expensive, and if there are few leaky parts by the walls or windows, much of it can be wasted. However, The Chicago Tribune recently shared some tips for those who are looking to make the season a little more bearable during the cold, snowy nights.

The first step is to check the efficiency of current heating systems. The furnace is a good place to start.

"Much like a car, your furnace should be maintained annually by a professional to ensure it’s working properly and will continue to do so throughout the frigid winter," industry expert Ralph Mufich told the news provider.

Families should also make a point to turn down the thermostat just a few degrees, because wearing sweatshirts can end up saving households a bundle.

Window treatments can also solve the problem of chilly drafts or leaky windows, especially honeycomb cellular shades. These particular window treatments are suited to keeping a home warm, because the specially-formed honeycomb cells are designed to capture cold air before it seeps into a home.
