Combining Roman shades, valance can obscure ugly view

Regardless of how nicely decorated the interior of a home is, the view of the outdoors is often out of the hands of the homeowner. Whether it be a neighbors unkempt yard or a less than ideal landscape, there are ways to mask what's outside by making use of creative window treatments inside.

Design expert Mimi Robillard told the Green Bay Press-Gazette that decorating the window is key when it comes to blocking the outside. Rather than simply hiding the view, Robillard suggests that combining a fabric valance with a Roman shade can keep the focus on the window and its surroundings, instead of the outdoor view.

"One of the things I would do is layer the window," Robillard told the news source. "Incorporate texture while letting the natural light in."

However, Roman shades can do much more than distract from an unwanted view. Experts say that Roman shades may keep light, heat and cold at bay - making them more energy efficient. By allowing for more temperature control they may also save the homeowner money.
