Many homeowners are looking for a creative way to make an abode more unique, and do-it-yourself projects are always tempting to ambitious families. However, plunging into a renovation without the proper preparation can be disastrous.

That's why, before the actual work begins, individuals should carefully consider what they are attempting to design. One couple, Bob and Mary Lou Ries, recently shared some of their own tips with Quad-City Times.

Homeowners should initially make the room an expression of their own personal hobbies. The space should to become a function for that specific interest. Then, try to represent this theme on the walls, either through paint or distinctive wallpaper.

Mary Lou advises that amateur designers also be open to any addition, because the right antique or quirky item can be used as an interesting decoration. If the color isn't right, a quick layer of spray paint can be applied.

"You can paint anything!" Mary Lou told the news provider.

Window treatments can also be practical and aesthetic improvements to a room. Roman shades are available in a variety of shades and fabrics, so that they can be customized to any desired theme.
