When it's time to set a decorative focal point for a room, homeowners may often go with a bright and notable piece of artwork. A distinctive painting in a living room can make a space feel dignified and cultured, but there is sometimes a risk that it can overwhelm guests.

The challenge then, is to find furniture that can complement the art, but not put it in the background. This can be a delicate balancing project, as interior designer Deborah Muccillo knows well, according to The Orange County Register.

She provided a few practical tips for those looking to create surroundings that can naturally accommodate the piece of art. One way to put the emphasis on the art but also keep furniture from looking bland is to incorporate a few pops of color in the room.

This can mean brightly colored chairs or sofas, but not so bright as to remove the focus from the art.

Another way homeowners can complement their piece is to hang roman shades on windows. These window treatments come in a variety of different patterns and colors that can easily suit any vibrant painting without being a distraction.
