Traditional home can be modernized with paints, horizontal fabric shadesOct 27 2010 ![]() Traditional home can be modernized with paints, horizontal fabric shades Kevin Walker, an architect, took the reins of the project and tore out one of the walls, along with built-in cabinets, before sealing off the dining room from the area, making the kitchen a more distinct space. The next step was to make the most of the kitchen's intimate, 160 square feet. To do so, Walker and his wife, Kelly, installed a vertical wine rack that wrapped around the chimney and inserted a cabinet underneath the kitchen island. Antique ventilation shafts were also transformed into cabinets, to maximize storage space. Using chalkboard paint and magnetic primer, the Walkers then polished their space, which became a blend of traditional and modern elements, which also took advantage of very possible nook and cranny. "You have to be creative in a small space like this," Kevin Walker told the news provider. "No corner went unused." Those who are redesigning a kitchen may also want to invest in horizontal fabric shades, which can add a touch of unique color and pattern to any room. These versatile window treatments have all the function of venetian blinds, but are easy to clean, as well.
