A conservatory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is among the leaders in the country of eco-friendly living that extends well past its gardens and into the buildings. The Evansville Courier and Press reports that Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens can provide homeowners with a guide as to how to best implement green living in their own houses.

One of the most useful elements in the conservatory is its snowmelt system in the front walkway. This eliminates the need for de-icing chemicals or polluting snow-removal equipment. In addition to the walkway, the welcome center is certified in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. According to the news source, it uses glass walls that reflect heat, as well as low-flow toilets in the bathroom.

"Over the last decade we've created a facility that's been recognized by many as one of the world's greenest gardens," executive director Richard Piacentini told the news outlet.

Homeowners interested in making their abode more environmentally friendly may want to consider hanging bamboo woven wood shades. Since they are constructed from a fast growing grass, the the harvest and production of this material causes little damage to the environment.
