Decorate the top of a staircase with pleated shades

An aspect of home design that is often overlooked is the staircase, but with a few creative flourishes, it can actually serve as one of the more impressive parts of a home, according to CantonRep.com.

"A stairway is a natural focal point in the home... visually, it takes your eye upward and creates drama," Mary Carol Garrity told the news provider.

Staircases are generally built in one of three models - straight, curved or spiral, but design can all be started with the flooring, which should complement the surface of the steps. Bamboo, marble or hardwood are popular materials for this aspect.

Railings should also be taken into account, as they can provide a pleasing contrast between the wall of a staircase and effectively frame the colors. This can work particularly well if homeowners turn the wall into a staircase gallery by hanging paintings and other pieces of artwork.

Many homes have windows at the top of a staircase as well, and these should be used as ways to illuminate the stairway. Pleated shades are available in a number of vibrant colors and patterns, and can fold neatly into a windowsill, allowing daylight into an area.
