Honeycomb shades can regulate high summer temperatures

Homeowners in some parts of the country may use their air conditioning units much more often than others, but in Washington's Snohomish County, Mark and Sharon Hammond started to suffer during the later weeks of July and August when the sunlight came pouring in through their windows and ignited the household, according to HerlandNet.com.

"That sun would beat us down," Mark Hammond told the news source.

The couple decided that they needed some kind of protection other than air conditioning. They hired Jane Hampton, a local employee of a Washington window treatment store. She had several different ideas for the couple, and claimed that shutters or fabric shades can both regulate the temperature.

The Hammonds settled on honeycomb shades, even for their skylights, which they now open and close with a long pole. The couple says that these window treatments are beautiful and functional.

"Honeycomb is really an insulator and it helps to avoid heat coming into the house. And, in the winter, it helps keep heat from going out," Hampton informed the news provider. She added that they have been prove to control home energy use.
