Dampness linked to development of allergies

New research has shown that children who live in damp homes are more likely to develop nasal allergies. Reuters reports that the study, which focused on 1,900 Finnish children, found that 16 percent of children studied whose parents reported dampness were diagnosed with allergic rhinitis in the following six years.

"Our study strengthens the evidence that exposure to indoor dampness increases the risk of developing allergic rhinitis," lead researcher Dr Jouni Jaakkola told the news source.

Jaakkola added that the reason for the increase likely lies in the fact that damp conditions are ideal for growth of dust mites, fungi and mold - all of which can cause trigger an allergy attack.

Dampness and moisture can present itself in numerous places throughout a home, but it is especially prevalent in kitchens and bathrooms.
